Metromaniacs Cast Offers Acting Classes

Shakespeare Theatre CompanyMembers of the cast in the Shakespeare Theatre Company's current production, The Metromaniacs, will be teaching one-day master acting classes during the play's run.

The Metromaniacs is David Ives's latest adaptation of a classic French play, this one by Alexis Piron, a comedy performed in rhyming couplets. It is the comic aspects of the play that will be the focus of the three workshops.

Christian Conn, who plays Damis, will lead the first workshop, "Find a Character with Christian Conn" on Monday, Feb. 23. Using the techniques of Michael Chekhov and others, Christian Conn (Damis in The Metromaniacs) will lead students in physical exploration, improvisation, and play with the ultimate goal of shaping fun, vivid characters.

"Be Funny! With Michael Goldstrom" is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 25. Goldstrom (Mondor in The Metromaniacs) will cover Laban-based techniques while working with comedic text to teach students how to “be funny.”

"Rehearsing Comedy with Amelia Pedlow" concludes the workshop series on Monday, March 2. Pedlow (Lucille in  The Metromaniacs) will lead students through an actor's approach to comedy and classics, including how to break down text, do appropriate research for inspiration, and use rehearsal time to craft a compelling performance.

All workshops start at 7 p.m. at The Forum at Sidney Harman Hall, 610 F Street NW in Washington, D.C. Tuition is $25 for single workshops, $60 for all three. Participants must be ages 14 and older.

You can register for each class or all three through the theater's box office calendar at www.shakespearetheatre.org/calendar/index.aspx.
